EM 272 Warning Coordination

Every year thousands of people are killed or injured as a result of severe weather and flooding. Tens of billions of dollars of property damage are inflicted on local communities in this nation each year. As the National Weather Service (NWS) modernizes its science and technologies, the enhancements to public safety through its warning program are dependent on effective warning coordination and communication with local and State officials and the media. It is only through effective warning coordination that the message of danger can be communicated to and understood by those at risk.

The vast majority of events that result in disaster declarations are weather- or flooding-related. Warning coordination when hazardous weather or flooding is probable is, therefore, paramount to saving lives and protecting property, as illustrated in the opening visuals. FEMA and the NWS have recognized the need to improve warning coordination and communication at all levels. This course is for State and local officials who are responsible for warning coordination and communication.

There are 6 sessions combined into one file of less than one megabyte for the benefit of low bandwidth (14.4 and 28.8 modem) users. The naming protocol is em272.exe. Graphics may not be optimum in these documents due to originals and file size considerations.

These course materials are derived from FEMA's G-272 Warning Coordination course released March 2001. These materials have not been significantly altered allowing the user to re-use these in the classroom setting.

Upon receiving your paid registration, we will send you the password to open these. We recommend you print out the pages as you need them and keep them as a paper reference.

When you pass the online test, you will be mailed a certificate of completion.

The final exam is 22 questions taken from the reading material. You may use any of the course materials while taking the test.
