EM 196 Advanced Incident Command System (ICS)

COURSE BACKGROUND

As incidents become larger and more complex, involving multiple agencies and/or jurisdictions, there is a need to employ special aspects of the Incident Command System (ICS) to manage the incidents effectively. This course is intended to train personnel who may be assigned to large incidents in the critical aspects of major incident management and area command.

The overall goal for this course is to enable the students to function within a unified or area command at a major incident. At the end of this course, the students should be able to respond to an incident scenario to:

• Select and develop a command structure that is appropriate for a major incident.
  
• Identify factors that may require expanding the command structure and select an appropriate method for expansion.
  
• Identify potential issues regarding coordination and communication with higher- and lower-level command structures, and develop strategies for preventing and/or resolving the issues.
  

There are five units and three appendices associated with this course. The course files are approximately 813 kilobytes for the benefit of low bandwidth (14.4 and 28.8 modem) users. The naming protocol is em196.exe. Graphics may not be optimum in these documents due to originals and file size considerations.

Upon receiving your paid registration, we will send you the password to open these. We recommend you print out the pages as you need them and keep them as a paper reference.

The test is taken online. When you pass the test, you will be mailed a certificate of completion.

The final exam is 40 questions taken from the reading material. You may use any of the materials while taking the test.
